Palliative Care

Everyone suffering with an advanced progressive illness will need some degree of support. Palliative care aims to provide active total care to patients whose desease is not responsive to curative treatment, to control pain and other distressing symptoms at the sensitive stages of an illness, and to offer a support system to both the patient and their family, helping them to come to terms and cope with the condition, and improve their quality of life.

In July 2008 the Government confirmed it's support for end of life services, pledging an additional £286m for palliative care services. Ministers say this is a top priority and they have written to health authorities encouraging them to back the palliative care programme.
